NorMet:
Norwegian Network for Metabolomics
What is metabolomics?
Metabolomics is the comprehensive study of small molecules (metabolites) present in biological samples, often using advanced chemical analysis techniques such as LC-MS and NMR spectroscopy. In clinical research, metabolomics provides a direct snapshot of biochemical activity and patient phenotype, offering insights into disease mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring. Compared to genomics and proteomics, which capture genetic potential and protein expression, metabolomics reflects the real-time physiological state. Unlike proteins or genes, metabolites lack universal amplification or sequence-based detection methods, demanding highly precise, standardized analytical workflows to ensure reproducibility. Our network, which spans across major Norwegian universities and hospitals, collaborates to address these challenges, to enable metabolomics as a key tool in diagnostics, precision medicine.
